Prof Nyhagen’s research explores views and experiences of Christian and Muslim women living in Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom in relation to their faith, identities and lived citizenship, and their perspectives on gender equality, women's movements and feminism. She has shown that secular feminist approaches to religion vary across public and private spheres from religion friendly to religion hostile. Prof Nyhagen has also researched mosques as gendered spaces, examining Muslim women’s mosque attendance in Norway, the UK and in other countries, as well as the lived experiences of Muslim students and staff in UK higher education.
