About

LUSARG began its work in 2022, initially under the name ‘Ukraine Response Group’, formed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and chaired by Professor Steve Rothberg. In 2023, the group broadened its remit to all academics and students at risk from around the world.

The committee is co-chaired by Dr Christina Oelgemoller (SSH) and Dr Alena Pfoser (SSH). Professor Malcolm Cook, former Chair, will remain on the committee as an executive sponsor. The group seeks to collaborate with other key stakeholders at ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ« and in the wider community, such as the Loughborough Student Union and local organisations that support refugees and asylum seekers.

Through LUSARG, ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ« has developed a strong partnership with Cara, the UK’s . Cara supports academics from around the world who need urgent help to escape from discrimination, persecution, violence or conflict. Cara also supports academics who choose to work on in their home countries despite serious dangers, and higher education institutions whose work is threatened or compromised.

ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ« is also currently working towards a University of Sanctuary status.  In autumn 2025, ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ« was awarded a University of Sanctuary status in recognition of its ongoing efforts in providing a welcoming environment for refugees and asylum seekers. This status has been awarded by , a charity that works with groups, organisations and individuals across every area and every sector in the UK to promote inclusivity, solidarity and compassion for those seeking sanctuary. Our membership serves as a reminder of an ongoing commitment to creating a culture of safety, inclusion and support, which is central to our strategic focus in fostering Vibrant and Inclusive Communities
